Because I had a meeting. I swept some snow off the front steps. I had coffee. I worked on a paper.
But Bubba? He learned to walk.
And I missed it. I went to pick him up at daycare and there he was, toddling around the room like a pro.
I'm so happy for him I could burst. I'm so sad for me that I could cry. I missed it!
He fell asleep in my arms tonight and I saw that I've been fooling myself that this will not be my privilege every night forever and ever amen. I want a big *pause* button.
I missed it. Wah.

I'm so sorry. Daycare should have video cameras for important moments like those.
What I did today? I learned about AMBER alerts and how to receive them on the computer and my cell phone.
I'm so sorry, Nora. That is a biggie. There will be more! So many more. And he'll run for YOU!
Darling picture!
Be prepared, that cute guy is going to do a lot of things "behind your back" before its over, LOL!
Seriously, I'm sorry you missed his first steps but happy to hear he took them.
Darla
I hear you on that Pause button. If only. Don't be too sad though: you'll get to be there for so many "firsts". And, in the end, it's not really the "first" moments that matter as much as the "always" moments. And, Mama, you'll *always* be there for him.
I'm glad you stopped by my place so I could find you here. :)
Oh, honey. At my first son's daycare, they asked me beforehand, "If he takes a first step here, do you want us to tell you?", which I thought was really thoughtful. Sorry for you, so happy for Bubba. Walk on, Bubba!
Awwww... When my oldest was a baby I used to watch my girlfriend's son as well, and he took his first steps at my house while she was at work. I purposely didn't say anything to her so that she wouldn't be sad.
I am sorry too! So many firsts and you always want to be there!
I find myself wanting to press Pause for my grandchildren and Rewind for my children. It all goes far too quickly. I'd sometimes like a Freeze button for those achingly beautiful moments that are so fleeting.
I think that you should conveniently forget what you saw or heard every time you think there has been a first in someone else's presence. Then, miracle of miracles --- ta da! It happens right in front of you for the FIRST TIME. The End. Of Guilt. Enough of that going around elsewhere, anyway.
sorry you missed it - I can imagine that it was heartbreaking (I "think" I saw my son's first steps, but who knows). There are a lot of other firsts to come, but do try and savour the baby moments. There are days I look at my two and try and figure out where the days went.
Way to go Bubba!
Poor Nora :(((( Did they get photos for you? That's a tough one to miss! If you locate that pause button, promise to send me the coordinates?
You know, I don't even remember either of my boys' "first" steps. I remember the gradual process of pulling up, walking the edges of the room holding onto furniture, and slowly, slowly getting brave enough to go out on their own. But I couldn't tell you when or where the actual first steps happened. I'm sure I wrote it down in the journals I keep for them.
I'm sorry you missed it, but know that the things that stick with you are the little moments of every day, the ways you notice that they grow and change even when no one else does. Mammas have a lot to hold onto that everyone else misses.
Oh, break my heart! It's IS sad to miss a big milestone.
Awww. I'm so sorry. You're a great mom, Nora.
Also, that picture is adorable.
Aw! Don't worry. I'm sure you'll get so see it a lot more than you ever wanted to in the next few months.
Thanks for leaving a comment over at my place. :)
I remember when I did in-home daycare. One of the best pieces of advice my mother gave me was to not tell parents when their child had done something new. That way when they finally saw it it would be new for them.
It is so hard having to miss "firsts" but at least you are the one that gets to hold him every night.
Wah. I'm sorry. That sucks.
Bummer.
That boy is terribly cute, he looks cuddilishious!
I know about the growing too fast business. My Miss 21 months has suddenly started talking, a lot! Today I was watering the garden and she ran up and said, "Strawberry! I want strawberry!"
It's okay. Even attachment-parenting nonstop around the clock never leave your kid moms (and with my first, I was one of them) miss milestones. You could've just turned your back. You'll get to watch all those other steps and have already savored many firsts, my dear. But I know, it hurts.
Ooohhh...I know your ache. I'm sorry!! If you find the pause button, will you let me borrow it for the rewind??
