I was remarking (and when I say remarking I mean complaining) to someone in the ladies' today that the soap dispenser wasn't working right. And then I chattered on way too long blah blah about how isn't it amazing how these little things make a surprising impact on your day, like if the soap dispenser in the ladies' isn't working blah blah (don't worry there's one of three dispensers that work so I can still wash my hands and keep my public health degree, yay).
And she was all, yes you are weird to let a soap dispenser affect your day, loser, but do you ever smell the soap after you put it on your hands?
And I was all, what?
And she was all, the soap. I put it on my hands (ed. note: from the ONE SOAP DISPENSER THAT WORKS) and then I smell it. Every time. Do you?
And I'm all, no.
But I figure this is like a THING. Like you do it or you don't. Go on, tell me. Do you smell the soap?

No. I didn't know I was supposed to!
No, I have to admit I never do. Maybe it smells very horrible. Or did she mean to imply that it smelled very good?
No. I am not a soap smeller. I pretty much want to wash well and figure out how to get out of a public restroom without touching another surface.
I have to admit I'm kind of a soap slut. I love a good smelling hand soap. Usually, in public restrooms, the soap is medicinal smelling. Yuck. So, yes, I smell the soap and have been known to go out of my way to go to a public restroom I know has good smelling soap. Yep. Weird.
I smell my hands after I wash them. Every time.
If the soap is sufficiently scented that I notice the smell, I'll lift my hands to my nose; otherwise no.
No, I don't smell the soap.
I don't linger in the bathroom, smelling freshly dispensed soap, but I loved the one in CA that smelled like pineapple.
And I love my pear soap at home.
Is that wrong?
No and I agree with Mary Alice.
I think bacon-scented soap might get my nose a little closer to it on a regular basis...
Gah! No way.
I can smell the soap just fine when it comes out of the dispenser onto my hands, and in public restrooms the smell is usually one I don't like.
Ack. Who knew I had strong feelings about smelling soap?
I only smell it if it is strong enough to reach my nostrils. I don't lift up my hands to specially sniff.
I love the almond scented soap at my favorite restaurant.
Lisa, can I come over and smell your pear soap? :)
I have to say that the thought of smelling the soap had never even occurred to me. And I felt strongly enough about sharing that feeling that I emerged from semi-lurkdom to express it.
No can't say I smell it first. Thank goodness you're posting more. I was starving.
Not really, but I'm sensitive to perfumes, so sometimes I smell the soap for hours afterward.
in a public loo? nope. i always hope the scent won't linger though...

I have a friend who is big on scents. I don't know if she smells the soap in the ladies', but she does sniff every soap, lotion, cosmetic, laundry detergent, household cleanser, etc.
Nope. But I am pleased if it's a nicely scented soap.
First time reader. I totally smell the soap. And have a fine appreciation for a pleasant smell.
I don't smell the soap in the bathroom. But after I wash my hands I smell them a lot. Especially if it's a new bathroom with new soap. The bathroom at my job has the nastiest smelling soap. Ick ick ick.
I'm with Mary Alice and Jenn. Soap up, rinse well, dry and use the paper towel to open the door. No smelling. Perhaps this is holdover from the days of pink goo soap that smelled like the school nurse's office?
Umm... noooo. I'm to preoccupied with trying to keep certian little persons from making snow angels on the public restroom floor and the like... then I herd them out the door and slather them in hand sanitizer. The scentless kind. Otherwise they'd try and eat it or something... ;)
Yes, definately a soap smeller. The smell of (some) soaps is one of my favorite scents. So, looking for that pleasant, soapy aroma. But, like Mary Alice, I avoid touching surfaces too. So the germ thing and the smell thing are two entirely different worlds for me.
Shyly raising hand: Hi, my name is Vanessa and I'm a soap smelling addict. I literally can not help myself.
I don't. But, I DO get pissed if my hands smell all perfumey. I know I'm spelling that wrong... Anyway, strong smells like that can send me into a migraine. So keep that lady away from me.
